The Third School of Medicine

Third Clinical Medical College of ZJ Chinese Medical University was formerly the Department of Acupuncture and Massage of ZJ Chinese Medical College. It was prepared and established in 1978 and began taking in vocational students of the acupuncture specialty since the autumn of 1983. In the spring of 1986, under the approval of the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Department of Education, the Department of Acupuncture and Massage was formulated inaugurated and initially it offered a five-year program of acupuncture undergraduate college education and a three-year program of massage vocational college education. In 1984, it was among the first schools to establish a postgraduate program of the acupuncture specialty. In 1989, it was made a province-level high-priority discipline under the decision of the Zhejiang Provincial Education Committee. In the spring of 1992, the school has started the ZJ Chinese Medical College acupuncture and massage Chinese medicine clinic. In 1994, it established the ZJ Chinese Medical College Acupuncture, Massage and Breathing Exercise Research Institute.

In 2001, Science of Acupuncture and Science of Massage were respectively listed as key disciplines in the Chinese medicine education system in Zhejiang. In 2002, the acupuncture and massage specialty started providing three academic directions, namely, acupuncture and massage, rehabilitation medicine and medical cosmetics. In 2003, the acupuncture and massage specialty were listed into the key specialties to be developed in Zhejiang. In 2004, the rehabilitation medicine specialty was created and started recruiting and was granted a postgraduate degree-granting program the next year. In July 2004, it was merged with the clinic of the former Medical College to become the ZJ Chinese Medical College Affiliated Acupuncture and Massage Hospital. In 2005, it was elected a province-level key discipline by Zhejiang Provincial Education Committee. In May 2006, the school was renamed as ZJ Chinese Medical University Third School of Clinic Medicine and the affiliated hospital as ZJ Chinese Medical University Third Affiliated Hospital.

In 2008, after the assessment and approval of the Provincial Department of Education, the acupuncture and massage specialty was granted the title of Key Specialty of Provincial Regular Universities and Colleges of Zhejiang. During the same year, it was approved as one of the first group of characteristics specialty projects by the Ministry of Education. In 2011 it started recruiting students of the seven-year-program Chinese medicine specialty (acupuncture and massage direction, successive graduate and postgraduate degrees). For more than thirty years, acupuncture, massage and rehabilitation practices have undergone thorough transformation and this school has developed into a provincially leading and nationally advanced academic institution in the practice, teaching and research of acupuncture, massage and rehabilitation sciences.

Currently the school has four academic research offices (acupuncture faculty office, massage faculty office, medical rehabilitation faculty office, and medical cosmetics faculty office) and four laboratories (experimental acupuncture laboratory, electrophysiology laboratory, acupuncture and immunology laboratory and massage technique testing room) under the acupuncture and massage research institute, as well as the administrative office and student’s affairs office. The ZJ Chinese Medical College Third Affiliated Hospital (also named Zhejiang Acupuncture and Massage Hospital or Zhejiang Province Zhongshan Hospital) which is characterized by with acupuncture and massage treatment is a direct affiliate to the school and the major clinical education base for the students of the school.

Besides, the school also has acupuncture demonstration classrooms, massage demonstration classrooms, practicing rooms, physical training rooms, technique and massage skills testing rooms, acupuncture laboratories, two simulated student acupuncture, massage and medical cosmetics clinics, and rehabilitation medicine demonstration classrooms, etc., that are of high standards and the best among the fellows colleges in China. Currently it has a staff of 616 people, of which 26 have primary senior professional title, 65 have secondary senior professional title, and 112 have intermediate professional title. 18 of the staff members have doctorate degrees and 65 have postgraduate degrees. For the moment, there are nearly 900 undergraduate students and 200 postgraduate students. Meanwhile it has cultivated a large group of adult-education students, foreign graduate students and oversea students. It has mainly taken on undergraduate courses as well as five postgraduate courses.

At the moment, it has carried one national 973-plan project, one sub-level project in the “eleven-five” national scientific supportive program, two national natural foundation programs, three provincial natural foundation projects and four other province or ministry-level programs. Over the past five years, it has won two provincial scientific advancement third prizes, one natural science first prize in the Ministry of Education science and technology award, one second prize in China Chinese Medicine Academic Association science and technology award, and six province-level departmental scientific innovation awards. Its staff has published 61 academic papers and eight monographs. In the last five years, one of the staff of the school has won the title of province-level famous teacher, one second prize in the Ministry of Health teaching courseware award, and two first prizes in the China Chinese Medicine Academic Association Scientific Popularization Works. Currently it has shouldered two provincial bureau of education teaching reform programs, nine university-level projects, three province-level high-quality courses, and one university-level high-quality course; it has published 21 textbooks and reference books as well as 28 teaching papers.

The ZJ Chinese Medical University Third Affiliated Hospital is a clinical teaching base directly affiliated to the school and is a Chinese medicine hospital strongly advantaged and characterized with Chinese medicine in its integrated practice of medical treatment, research, teaching, healthcare and rehabilitation. The hospital has 406 approved beds, a Chinese medicine brain disease treatment center, a rheumatism treatment center, a rhachiopathic and osteoarthrotic disease treatment center, 25 clinical divisions, including internal medicine division, surgery division, acupuncture division, massage division, orthopedics division, rehabilitation division, oncology department, neurology division, cadre department, gynecology department, pediatrics department, otorhinolaryngology department, and stomatology department, etc., and one intensive care unit. It can receive more than 310 thousand outpatient visits and handle 1600 discharges annually and the prescribe more than an average of 1.5 tons of Chinese medicine for a day. It has in possession such modernized medical equipment such as 16-row spiral CT, CR, colored type-B ultrasonic, electronic gastroscope, automatic biochemical analyzer, and transcranial Doppler, etc., which have provided a solid platform for the ongoing Chinese medicine clinical education and research. The only famous Chinese medicine hospital approved by the Zhejiang provincial bureau of health to be established in Zhejiang, Zhejiang Famous Chinese Medical Hospital, is located in our school. The hospital is headed by the master of Chinese medicine, state-level famous senior Chinese medicine practitioner, and leading authority in the field of Chinese medicine in Zhejiang -professor He Ren and has grouped a staff composed of 20 state or province level famous Chinese medicine doctors and more than 100 experienced Chinese medicine experts with rich experience, and high reputation, in the Chinese medical treatment of tumors, autoimmune rheumatic diseases, kidney conditions, cardiovascular diseases, mastitis, pediatric diseases, gynecological diseases and other complex diseases and conditions. It is strongly characterized by Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, orthopedic treatment and health rehabilitation and provides a forceful support for the clinical education of the students of the school.
