Founded in April 2000, College of Life Science was formerly the molecular medicine research institute inaugurated in 1979. Currently it has one postgraduate study program in Foundation of Sino-west medicine combination and been cooperating with Beijing Chinese Medicine University in cultivating doctors in Foundation of Sino-west medicine combination since 2004; at the moment it has three specialties which are biological science, biological technology and medical escomatics and is one of the educational research institutions in China that have taken on postgraduate and undergraduate education of medical life sciences. It contains six faculty offices (research rooms): bio-chemical faculty office (research room), genetic and molecular biology faculty office (research room), cell biology faculty office (research room), microorganism and immunology faculty office (research room), general biology faculty office (research room) and clinical escomatics faculty office (research room).
The Sino-west medicine combination course of the school is a key Chinese medicine discipline in Zhejiang and a category-B course of Zhejiang and the school has built the SATCM lipid metabolism level-three laboratory, the proteomics laboratory for the Zhejiang province top-priority clinical Chinese medicine foundation course and the Zhejiang Administration of Chinese Medicine Chinese medicine angiocardiopathy key laboratory. In recent years, it has undertaken nearly 30 province or ministry-level or higher level scientific research projects and won nearly 20 awards of the provincial bureau level or higher; it has developed two types of new medicines, one of which has already been put onto the market.
The school now has a team of 35 teachers, of which, 3 have primary senior professional title, 7 have secondary senior professional title, five are candidates in the Zhejiang “151 talent project”, five are financed in the Zhejiang Province young university teacher support program, one enjoys special State Council subsidy and one has the title of outstanding teacher of Zhejiang. The teaching and research staff of the school is also well structured. In general, the school recruits one to two doctors and twelve to fifteen postgraduate students annually. As of this year, the school has one full-time doctoral student, 37 masters, 776 undergraduate students; 496 students have already graduated from the biological science specialty, 237 from the medical escomatics specialty and 59 from the biological technology specialty. The school has a profound academic atmosphere and the students and teachers enjoy a harmonious relationship with each other. The school has been aiming at driving education with research and promoting research with education and instituted a laboratory open-up system to fully tap the potential of the students; it also encourages innovation and focuses on improving the comprehensive competence of the students. The students from the school have won second and third prizes in the Challenge Cup of National University Student Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition and the special award, first, second and third prizes in the Challenge Cup of the Zhejiang province. The school is an advanced unit in university student ideological education of the university and an advanced unit in employment affairs of the university.
