School of Basic Medical Science

College of Basic Medical Science (formerly the Basic Course Department) came into being in 1984. In 1999 it was restructured into the Department of Fundamental Medicine and later in 2006 renamed the School of Fundamental Medicine up to this day. For many years, the school has stuck to the spirit of “harmonious, stable, truthful and down-to-earth” and under the correct leadership of the university party organization and administration, the care and support of the fellow departments, and the joint efforts of the whole faculty and staff body, achieved the desired steady and sure development in various aspects.

At the moment, the school has ten faculty offices which are clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course, Chinese medicine pharmacology, Chinese medicine diagnosis, fundamental theory of Chinese medicine (Inner Canon), Chinese medicine historical literature, pathogenic organism (immunology) and preventive medicine (statistical), physiology, pathology, biochemistry, and normal human body anatomy (histoembryology), of which, the faculty offices of clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course, Chinese medicine pharmacology, Chinese medicine diagnosis, physiology, Chinese medicine historical literature, and pathogenic organism (immunology) and preventive medicine (statistical) are elected as university outstanding and demonstrative faculty offices. The school has two teaching experiment centers, namely function-centered teaching experiment center and form-centered teaching experiment center; the former was awarded as one of the first group of regular university and college fundamental course experiment and demonstration centers in the province. Besides it possesses a State Administration of Chinese Medicine third-level laboratory (immunology laboratory), one university-prioritized Chinese medicine four-diagnosis practical training room and one Chinese medicine clinic.

It now has a staff of 80 employees, of which 45 have secondary senior or higher professional titles (specifically 21 with primary senior title and 24 with secondary senior title), 13 are doctoral supervisors and 31 postgraduate student instructors; three people are among objects in the “151” first and second-level talent cultivation in Zhejiang and two are young leaders in specific fields of research in universities and colleges in Zhejiang; the school also emphasizes the team development: the clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course team was once elected one of the province-level key technology innovation team and state-level teaching teams, the Chinese medicine pharmacology team was once elected province-level teaching team; among the teachers, there are currently one province-level famous teacher and two province-level outstanding individuals in teaching moral.

The school has undertaken 42 fundamental courses of all the discipline in the university. During the past few years, it has an outstanding achievement with regard to course construction. At the moment, it has two state-level high-quality courses (Synopsis of Golden Chamber and Chinese medicine pharmacology), two province-level high-quality courses (Chinese medicine diagnosis and fundamental theory of Chinese medicine) and seven university-level high-quality courses and has relied on using these high-quality courses to drive the development of other courses.

For the moment, it possesses one national key discipline (clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course) and three SATCM key disciplines (Synopsis of Golden Chamber, Chinese medicine diagnosis and Chinese medicine on arthromyodynia). The clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course has a long history and profound intellectual deposit: as early as in the 1950s, professional He Ren, the founder of the discipline, and his colleagues has already published works such as Summary of Synopsis of Golden Chamber, and Vernacular Explanation of Detailed Analysis of Epidemic Warm Diseases, etc. In 1995, it was elected as one of the first group of key disciplines in universities and colleges in Zhejiang. In 1997, the State Council Academic Degree Committee adjusted the disciplinary catalogue and integrated Synopsis of Golden Chamber, Treatise on Febrile Diseases and Epidemic Febrile Disease Theory into the clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course. In 2000, it was again elected as one of the second group of key disciplines in universities and colleges in Zhejiang.

In 2001, the course was chosen as an SATCM key discipline. In 2005, it was included in the list of top-priority disciplines of Zhejiang. In 2007, it was rated as a national key discipline by the Ministry of Education, honorably being the first one from province-financed universities and colleges of Zhejiang. After many years of diligent work and care, the clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course has been developed into a key discipline with outstanding research achievements, strong characteristics and profound influence in China. During the past few years, the school has undertaken two national “eleven-five” scientific supportive programs, two national public sector special projects, five national natural foundation financed projects, thirty province or ministry-level projects and ninety-five municipal projects. It has won one first prize in provincial government scientific advancement award, one second prize in national teaching achievement award, one second prize in province-level outstanding teaching achievement award, one first prize and four third prizes in provincial government scientific advancement award. It has published more than 50 books, of which 18 are academic monographs, headed or participated in the editing of more than 30 textbooks of the universities and colleges. Moreover four papers by its staff members are collected in the SCI database.

The school has one doctoral program (clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course) and five postgraduate programs (fundamental theory of Chinese medicine, clinic Chinese medicine fundamental course, Chinese medicine diagnosis, Chinese medicine pharmacology, and Chinese medicine history and literatures). The excellent scientific resources and team under its charge will provide great basis for the education and cultivation of postgraduate students.

Under the joint efforts of the whole body of the faulty and students, the school has become the linchpin for the education, research and medical practice of the university. “Only he who sows can reap”. The school was respectively elected three-cultivation advanced unit in provincial universities in 2006 and 2010 and an advanced unit in the activity of “building learning organization and being knowledge-based employees” in the province.
