Graduated from Tianjin Medical University in 1982 and later gained a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Louisville in 1992;

Currently serves as director of and professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Rush University Medical Center;

Has long been committed to the research of bone development and bone remodeling, with his research directions focused on: 1) The molecular pathological mechanisms of osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and fracture healing; 2) The establishment of mouse model for transgenosis and gene knockout of specific action on osteoblasts and chondrocytes; 3) The molecular mechanism of BMP and Wnt/β-catenin signaling system and its role in osteoblasts and chondrocytes; 4) The regulation effect of ubiquitin-proteasome system and micro-RNA on bone-specific proteins; and 5) The screening and development of drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis diseases;

As project leader, has assumed a number of projects funded by U.S. NIH/NIAMS and gained a fund amounting to ten millions of US dollars;

Has published hundreds of academic papers on international well-known journals such as Science, J Cell Biol, J Clin Invest, Stem Cells, J Bone Miner Res, J Cell Sci, Arth Rheum, Mol Cell Biol, and J Biol Chem, which have been cited more than 2400 times;

Has published 13 monographs and filed and released 8 U.S. and international patent applications, with the research achievements considered at world’s leading level;

CHEN is a much needed leading specialist in the basic theoretical area and technical area oftraumatology and orthopaedicsof integrative western-Chinese medicine.
