College of nursing, initially the Traditional Chinese Nursing Teaching and Research Section of Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, was established in 1997. In the same year, the school started to recruit associate degree nursing students. The school was renamed as Nursing Department in 1999 and its four–year undergraduate nursing program started in 2000. In 2005, the school was granted to offer program for Master of Nursing. The Nursing Department was again renamed as School of Nursing in 2006. Currently, there are around 1000 full-time nursing students in the school and its one-time employment rate of graduates is 100%. It has become a main base for cultivating high level nursing talents in Zhejiang Province.

During the last 10 years, the education philosophy of the school has been updated constantly, teaching facility improved, teaching management standardized, and teaching team become more reasonable gradually. The specialty of nursing was granted to be the key construction discipline of Zhejiang Province in 2007 and special characteristic discipline construction site of National Education Department in 2010. The school now serves as a unit member of Nursing Higher Education Steering Committee of Education Department, the 3rd unit member of Higher Education Teaching Material Review Committee, the vice-president unit of Nursing Education under the National Higher Education Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and also the provincial training base for the key discipline of Chinese-Western Integrated Nursing.

The School of Nursing is well organized with four Teaching and Research Sections, namely Fundamentals of Nursing, Traditional Chinese Nursing, Gynecological, Obstetric, Pediatric Nursing, and Adult Nursing. Among them, three are university level excellent model teaching and research sections. Its nursing experiment center has a space of 1,500 square meters, with well equipped facilities and advanced equipment. The center won Special Fund for Provincial Higher Education Laboratory Construction from the Department of Finance of Zhejiang Province in both 2003 and 2009.

The school has an academic team with reasonable structure in terms of age, education level, graduating school and professional title and a characteristic of integrating western and traditional Chinese medicine. Currently, we have 21 full time academic staff. Among them, 2 are professors and 8 are associate professors and 6 master degree nursing supervisors. All staff loves their position and respects their career, while being innovative. The school of nursing has been awarded a series of prizes including: Excellent Group of the University for several times, 2004 “Excellent Group for Three Aspects of Education Work” in Provincial High Education Institutions awarded by provincial Education Trade Union, 2007 “The First National Traditional Chinese Nursing Excellent Group” awarded by China Association of Chinese Medicine, and 2008 the honorary title of “Women's Civilization Kong of Zhejiang Province”.

Since its establishment, the academic staff actively explores nursing education reform and carries out various scientific researches. In the last few years, the staff undertook 50 research projects at the provincial, ministerial level, department or bureau level, published over 100 papers in level two or above academic journals, edited and wrote almost 30 Nationally Planned Textbooks and Provincial Key Textbooks, in charge of 3 provincial-level quality courses, won a 2nd prize, two 3rd prize of Science and Technology Progress Award, one 1st prize, one 2nd prize, one 3rd prize of Zhejiang Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology and Innovation Award, a 2nd prize of Health bureau of Zhejiang Province Technology and Innovation Award, one 3rd prize for Chinese Nursing Association Progress in Science and Technology Award, one 2nd prize, one 3rd prize of Outstanding Audio-visual Materials of China Education Technology Association, etc.

Based on the profound cultural atmosphere of traditional Chinese medicine, rich teaching resources, and abundant clinical practice base of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, all staff from school of nursing work hard with a pioneering spirit and introduce advanced teaching philosophy, methods and approach, while paying attention to the cultivation and coordinated development of students’ knowledge, competency and quality. The objective of the school is to take the strength of both traditional Chinese and western medicine and train applied talents. It has a distinct professional characteristic of Western and Chinese Medicine combined and a strong employment competitiveness advantages. At the same time, the school pays attention to foreign exchange. It has academic exchanges with nursing schools in the USA, the UK, Korea, Australia, Japan, Hong Kang, Macao, and Taiwan and the school has established cooperative schooling relationship with Melbourne Royal Medical School, Australia.

The Staff will endeavor to develop the school of nursing into a nationally advanced and internationally recognized nursing talents training base so as to contribute for the society. The school will insist on the guidance of scientific outlook on development, emphasizing “people oriented” education philosophy, with a purpose of innovative nursing education model and improving the quality of talent training.
